Reportedly fitness tracker app Strava revealed secret US army bases on its Global Heat Map. The smartphone app is compatible with devices like Fitbit or other smart bands. This app was being used by US army while jogging or fitness activities, it made their jogging routes and map data uploaded on the Strava App’s server.
The uploaded heatmap contains almost 1 billion logged fitness actives along with 10 terabytes of raw input data including 3 trillion GPS data points fetched from user’s device. As per reports, US military analysts noticed the heat map revealing sensitive information about US military bases. According to Nathan Ruser, Analyst, The US military bases are clearly identifiable and mappable.
Not only US military bases, the heat map also revealed possible petrol and supply routes of other military bases like Afghanistan. Possibly someone forgot to turn off their fitness tracker app, which leads the information breach.
It really gives goosebumps as the information is opensource and available for all. The strava app heat map also reveals information of overseas military bases such as in Syria, Djibouti etc. also including the larger military bases which aren’t even visible on satellite maps like Google map, like US Air Force base “Area 51 or Homey Airport”.
Just one mistake of turning off the fitness tracker app, and this type of massive sensitive information breach. What do you think ? let us know.
