Youtube Ads infected and Being Used to Mine Cryptocurrency

With the rise of several cyrptocurrencies, the more people are entering into the crypto mining industry. And hackers aren’t behind of them at all, recently youtube has been spotted displaying ads containing malicious cryptocurrency mining code that will drain your cpu to mine crypto coins while you’re watching youtube.

Antivirus provider Trend Micro security researchers first detected the cryptocurrency miners on youtube. They said,”the attackers behind the ads were abusing Google’s DoubleClick ad platform to display them to YouTube visitors in select countries, including Japan, France, Taiwan, Italy, and Spain.”

On Tuesday, several user’s antivirus programs started detecting malicious cryptocurrency mining codes when they were on youtube. Even if the user switches to another browser, their antivirus kept blocking the access due to the malicious codes, but they noticed that it was limited only in youtube. The affected users took several media platforms to report this issue.

According to the researchers, youtube ads were being used to mine monero cyptocurrency. In most of the cases, the ads contains publicly available javascript provided by coinhive which allows subscribers to make profit by surreptitiously using other computer for mining crytpto coins. It’s simply because people spends long time on youtube, and the ads were letting hackers to use user’s cpu power to mine cryptocurrency. The longer the users are mining for cryptocurrency the more money is made.

Recently Google (parent compnay of youtube) has released an official statement, “Mining cryptocurrency through ads is a relatively new form of abuse that violates our policies and one that we’ve been monitoring actively. We enforce our policies through a multi-layered detection system across our platforms which we update as new threats emerge. In this case, the ads were blocked in less than two hours and the malicious actors were quickly removed from our platforms.”
